How to use spamhaus.org with EIMS

We are using EIMS (Eudora Internet Mailserver) since 1998. It’s a very stable mailserver, created for Macs using OS 8.x/9.x and OS X. Since we’re running it under OS 8.6, the following description is for OS’s prior to 10.

Tired of Spam?
I found a very good source for blocking Spams within EIMS. It’s based on the old ORDB-Lists, but has a lot of features that were missing in ORDB: http://www.spamhaus.org.

How to connect?
Spamhaus uses the standard communication layer that is used by ORDB. Here’s a step by step description:

1) Browse to „Filters“ or „Filters (Disabled)“ within your EIMS installation and locate the ORDB Filter.
2) Duplicate it and rename it to „SPAMHAUS filter“.
3) Open it up with ResEdit or a similar Resource-Editor (Figure 1).
4) Browse to resource „STR#“ and open it up. Then open ID 128 and edit it as shown in Figure 2.
5) Save it and you’re done. Remember to copy the filter to „Filters“, not „Filters (disabled)“!

Now restart EIMS and you’ll see the SPAMHAUS filter starting up. To test your configuration, send a mail to nelson-sbl-test@crynwr.com via EIMS. If everything is fine, you’ll receive a reply like this:

Testing your SBL block. See http://www.crynwr.com/spam/ for more info.
Please note that this test will not tell you if your server is open for
relaying. Instead, it tests to see if your server blocks email from IP
addresses listed in various blocking lists; in this case, the SBL list.

Here’s how the conversation looked from sbl.crynwr.com.
Note that some sites don’t apply the SBL block to postmaster, so
I use your envelope sender as the To: address.

I connected to YOUR IP and here’s the conversation I had:

220 YOUR SERVERNAME running Eudora Internet Mail Server VERSION OF EIMS
helo sbl.crynwr.com
250 YOUR SERVERNAME hello sbl.crynwr.com (192.203.178.107)

550 5.7.1 your server is listed in the SPAMHAUSLIST, see http://www.spamhaus.org
Terminating conversation

Spam is decreased at around 90% right now. :-)
